23 Jul Jan’s Pick for September
Writing this post feels good. Real good. Why? It means it’s time to kick off round two of Mormon Guitar.
Making the album these last few months has been a thousand times more taxing emotionally and spiritually than I was expecting. I mean, it’s just a solo acoustic guitar album. How hard could that be? Harder than I was expecting – foe show.
The hardest part was letting it go. Knowing when to stop is so difficult. I think I drove everyone insane by not being satisfied and wanting to redo everything. It was awful.
But then I realized something. I was treating this album like it was the end, when really it’s the beginning. Anything I wanted to do differently, I’ll just do it on the next one. Once I realized that, everything on the album sounded perfect. Not because it is technically perfect, but because it captured what Mormon Guitar was this last year. It doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. Instead, it gives me absolute freedom to do whatever I want with the next batch of songs.
And first up is …..
The Spirit of God
That’s what I’m talking about.
September’s hymn was chosen by Jan Hurst, who was so incredibly kind and chose the “You Pick the Hymn” reward from the Kickstarter campaign. She also may or may not be my Mother-in-law. (How many of you can say your mother-in-law supports your hobbies like this? Yep, she’s pretty awesome.)
I’ve got A LOT of ideas brewing right now on this one. I don’t want to say anything because it’s too early to commit which way I’m going to go with it. But just know that I’ve been looking forward to getting back to the monthly hymns for a while now and I’m going to give this one everything I’ve got.
Let’s do this.
